Abstract

In this article, the waves of the coast are considered “natural materialities” that acquire visibility mainly through its quality for surfing. The waves consist of a good way to identify different processes of appropriation. Considering the territories and their spatial configurations, as well as the desires of practitioners and/or forms of political regulation, three processes of wave appropriation are identified, each leading to different outputs such as political, economic or “identity-related”. First, surf waves can be turned into a public heritage leading to territorial identification. They can also be purely and simply privatized to strictly generate economic profits. Finally, they can be monopolized to maintain a closed community. These three forms of appropriation were brought out of study cases analyzed in different field surveys and they allow us to insist on the fact that the processes of appropriation of a homogeneous object such as the wave can result in completely different outputs.
