Cold War in Gotham City

an analysis of The Dark Knight Returns, by Frank Miller

Abstract

Abstract: This article aims to analyze how elements of the North American ideological and propagandistic conflict of the Cold War appear in the Comic Book (HQ) entitled The Dark Knight Returns, by Frank Miller, released in 1986. Of the 20th century was directly or indirectly influenced by the Cold War, it is predictable that cultural and artistic manifestations also carried in themselves representations of this conflict. In this regard, films, TV series, books and comics featured stories that illustrated characters and events that refer to events in the conflict between the Americans and the Soviets. We believe that The Dark Knight Returns is a valuable source for studies of this type. The plot mixes traditional elements of comics, being full of alien heroes, vigilantes, high technology, with extremely masked human conflicts and barbs to the American society of the 80s, especially to the political class.
