Abstract

The purpose of the work is to analyze how the Relief Committees worked to treat the population affected by disease outbreaks in Colônia São Pedro de Alcântara, located in the Province of Piauí, between 1875 and 1885. During this period, the poor population of the region was facing a major drought that afflicted the Northeast, leading to a systemic social crisis, one of the results of which was an increase in the number of illnesses. In this way, these services were responsible for assisting the population of the Colony, not only in the treatment of epidemics, but also in providing clothing, food, shelter and medicine in crisis situations, such as drought.
