Abstract

David Caldas was a prominent journalist, politician and intellectual from 19th century Piauí. In addition to his function as a historical republican – a dimension of his existence most explored by historiography – the author was a skillful interpreter of his time. Through the newspapers O Amigo do Povo and Oitenta e Nove, this work seeks to analyze Caldas's writings published between 1868 and 1875, perceiving him as a historical subject who, through his intellectual activity (as a writer, politician and teacher), sought to intervene in the world around him. Therefore, dialogues are established with researchers like Teresinha Queiroz (2011), Vinicius Leão Araújo (2021), Thiago Krause and Rodrigo Goyena Soares (2022).

Author Biographies

Rodrigo Thadeu Paiva Dias, Federal University of Piauí

She has a degree in History from the Federal University of Piauí (2021). She is currently (2023-2025) doing a Master's degree in Brazilian History, in the History, Culture and Art research line, at the Federal University of Piauí. Her research focuses on Intellectual History, History and Literature, History and the Press.

Teresinha de Jesus Mesquita Queiroz, Federal University of Piauí

She has a BA in History (1977) and a BA in Economics (1983) from the Federal University of Piauí, an MA in History from the Federal University of Paraná (1984) and a PhD in Social History from the University of São Paulo (1992). She is currently Associate Professor IV at the Federal University of Piauí, where she works in the Department of History and the Postgraduate Program in Brazilian History (Master's and Doctorate). Her research focuses on History and Literature, History and the Press, Political History, History and Sociabilities and Piauí Historiography.
