Abstract

Hitler’s Monsters: A Supernatural History of the Third Reich, by Eric Kurlander, offers an original and thought-provo
king approach to the Nazi regime by investigating the connections between occultism, esotericism, and magical thin
king in the policies and practices of the Third Reich. Rather than limiting his analysis to the conventional explanation
of the ideological aspects of Nazism commonly associated with scientific racism, authoritarianism, and expansionism,
Kurlander examines how the occult and supernatural imaginary permeated the symbolic apparatus and certain concrete
actions of Adolf Hitler’s regime. The author reveals how the Nazi regime appropriated esoteric traditions, pseudos
ciences, and archaic mythologies to justify a power project that presented itself as ‘scientific,’ but which, at its core, was
permeated by mystical and irrational beliefs.

Author Biography

Rodrigo Felipe Veloso, Universidade Estadual de Montes Claros

PhD candidate in Applied Linguistics (Unicamp), member of the Multiliteracies and Portuguese Language Teaching research group (Unicamp). Master's degree in Brazilian Literature (2004-UFC), Specialist in Writing and Creation (2022-UNIFOR) and Bachelor's degree in Portuguese Language and Literature (2000-UFC). Since 2014, she has been an Assistant Professor at the University of the State of Amazonas.
