Abstract

This study is an excerpt from a research project that sought to examine the reception strategies used by 8th grade students at the Escola Municipal de Ensino Fundamental Professora Maria Nadir Filgueira Valente, in the municipality of Cametá/PA. The research was applied by reading the short story O Bisavô e a Dentadura (2001), by Sylvia Orthof, and the stages of application were developed based on the Receptive Method of Bordini and Aguiar (1993). As a theoretical contribution, we used the studies of Jauss (et al; 2002) on the Aesthetics of Reception. In addition, studies by: Aguiar (2011); Barthes (1987); Bordini and Aguiar (1993) and Cosson (2009). The results validated that the students' horizon of expectations is built around their socio-cultural experiences.

Author Biographies

Ivone dos Santos Veloso, Federal University of Pará

PhD in Literary Studies (UFPA), she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses and is a permanent professor in the Graduate Program in Language Studies (PPGEL/UFPA). She currently coordinates the research project “In the pages of newspapers, between the lines of novels: ethics and aesthetics in Dalcídio Jurandir” and the extension project “Literary Windows.”

Yandra Dias de Oliveira, Federal University of Pará

Graduated in Literature with a major in Portuguese Language (UFPA), she works as a volunteer fellow for the research and extension project “Literary Windows: literary and civic education in (non)school environments.” She worked as a fellow on the extension project “Literary Windows: reading club for teachers” and as a volunteer on the research project “Dalcídio Jurandir: faces of the journalist, counterfaces of the novelist.”
