Abstract

Debates on banning cell phone use in Brazilian schools raise discussions about the boundaries of children’s and adolescents’ introduction to and presence in the digital environment. Issues concerning potential mental health impacts and the accountability of digital platforms permeate the topic, reinforcing and demanding critical reflections on the subject from social, legal, and ethical perspectives, as proposed in this text. Without claiming to exhaust such a vast subject, this work contributes to broadening and provoking tensions. The methodological approach consists of a literature review. A preliminary conclusion within the scope of this discussion is that technological education appears to be a more effective path toward ensuring safe usage and fostering a more ethical approach by Big Tech companies responsible for digital platforms.
