Abstract

This study analyzes how the content on Protected Areas (PAs) is presented in 9th-grade Science textbooks approved by PNLD 2024, highlighting its relevance to biodiversity conservation and students’ environmental education. The qualitative, bibliographic, and documentary research examined 12 textbooks from different collections through content analysis organized into six thematic categories: concept and types of PAs; biodiversity preservation; protection of natural and cultural heritage; human populations and sustainable activities; threats to PAs; and Environmental Education and citizenship. The results show that the topic appears in most books, but in a superficial and fragmented way, with little integration among ecological, social, and cultural dimensions. There is variation in the quality of approaches and a scarcity of connections to traditional populations, socio-environmental conflicts, and critical educational practices, indicating the need for more contextualized, integrative, and formative teaching materials in basic education.

He holds a degree in Biological Sciences (Teacher Education) and built his academic path by integrating teaching, research, and community outreach activities. He was a fellow of the Tutorial Education Program (PETCiências), where he developed interdisciplinary projects, educational actions, and cultural initiatives aimed at improving science education. His research focused on pedagogical practices found in Latin American elementary science textbooks, emphasizing critical, contextualized, and reflective approaches to teaching and learning. He also participates in continuing education initiatives for teachers through formative cycles in Science and Mathematics Education, collaborating with research groups dedicated to improving classroom practices and teacher development. In addition, he joined the Institutional Program for Teaching Initiation Scholarships (PIBID) between 2022 and 2023, working in interdisciplinary activities involving Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. As an undergraduate research fellow, he investigated critical thinking in Biology teaching through the analysis of Colombian textbooks. He is currently a master’s student in the Graduate Program in Science Education (PPGEC).

Ruben Alexandre Boelter, Universidade Federal da Fronteira Sul. Cerro Largo, RS, Brasil

Ruben Alexandre Boelter earned his degree in Biological Sciences from Universidade Federal de Santa Maria in 1997. He obtained a Master’s degree in Biological Sciences/Animal Biodiversity (2005) and a Ph.D. in Science with a concentration in Science Education from the same institution. He develops projects in the research fields of Paleontology, Herpetology, and Science Education. In his academic curriculum, the most frequent terms related to his scientific and technological production include Amphibians, Introduction of Exotic Species, Environmental Education, Paleontology, and Science Teaching, with emphasis on Environmental Education and Paleontology.
